Two different ideas of "premium"
Aura Bath & Spa's achievement is aesthetic: a true matte finish that tolerates steam, so a bathroom can carry the flat, gallery-wall look that used to be impossible in wet rooms. Its defence is a dense, water-shedding film — keep water off the wall and mould gets no foothold.
Perma-White's achievement is biological: a mildewcide bonded through the whole film as it cures, not resting near the surface. Wiping the wall does not clean the protection away, because the protection is the film. One paint bets on keeping water out; the other bets on surviving what happens when water gets in anyway.
Side by side
| Property | Zinsser Perma-White | BM Aura Bath & Spa |
|---|---|---|
| Defence strategy | Mildewcide bonded through the film | Dense water-shedding matte film |
| Survives repeated wipe-downs | Yes — protection is in the film | Film holds; no active mildewcide claim |
| Signature finish | Eggshell (washable, soft sheen) | Matte — its main selling point |
| Self-priming | Yes, on most cured substrates | Primer recommended on problem walls |
| Mould warranty | 5-year mould & mildew-proof film warranty | No equivalent published warranty |
| Price position in Singapore | Premium (S$109 / 3.78L white) | Premium, typically higher per litre |
| Best room | Bathrooms, kitchens, remediated walls | Design-led powder rooms, ventilated ensuites |
The Singapore clause
Both paints were engineered for climates with a dry season. Singapore does not have one — ambient humidity sits above 80% for much of the year, and a HDB bathroom can be steamed twice a day, every day, for a decade. In that regime a passive water-shedding film is under permanent test, and any breach — a hairline crack, a poorly sealed corner, a wiped-too-hard patch — becomes a foothold. An active, bonded mildewcide keeps working precisely at those breach points. That is the honest technical reason we stock one and not the other.
Where we would honestly use each
- Zinsser Perma-White — bathrooms, kitchens, service yards, any wall that has grown mould before, any wall that gets wiped weekly.
- Benjamin Moore Aura Bath & Spa — a well-ventilated ensuite or powder room where the matte look is the point and the budget is comfortable.
After remediation, there is no debate
A wall that has already grown mould once has proven it can. After a fungicidal wash and stabilisation, the topcoat is the long-term defence — and that is the moment for the bonded film with a written 5-year mould and mildew-proof warranty behind it. It is why our own remediation crews carry Perma-White.
Common questions
Is Benjamin Moore Aura Bath & Spa a bad paint?
No. It is a genuinely premium bathroom paint with an unusual matte film that tolerates steam. The question is which chemistry survives Singapore's year-round humidity longest, not whether one is bad.
What is the single biggest technical difference?
Where the defence lives. Aura Bath & Spa relies on a tight, water-shedding matte film; Perma-White carries a mildewcide bonded through the whole film, so the protection survives years of wipe-downs rather than sitting near the surface.
Which one goes on a wall after professional mould remediation?
Zinsser Perma-White. A remediated wall has already proven it can grow mould — the topcoat needs active, film-level defence plus a 5-year mould and mildew-proof warranty, which is the bonded-mildewcide chemistry.
